Pioneering WOC in Beauty Finally Get The Shout Out They Deserve

Could you or someone you know be the next winner of the
Precious Hair & Beauty Awards?

Setting up your own beauty brand may be a pipedream for most of us, but there are certain ladies who have the chutzpah to make it happen, either through frustration at the lack of products that cater for them, or just wanting to turn their passion for beauty products into a lucrative career. So as a salute to these determined ladies who don’t take no for an answer, this year marks the first ever PRECIOUS Hair and Beauty Awards (#PreciousHABA).

Meet the judges. Top Latent Kalimba; bottom left Dr Clare Anyiam and bottom right Florence Adepoju

The awards are open to all women of colour who are making waves in the hair and beauty sectors, helping to create a more diverse and inclusive market for all. The idea was the brainchild of two pioneering ladies: Foluke Akinlose MBE (the founder of the original PRECIOUS Awards celebrating women of colour in business) and Dr. Clare Anyiam-Osigwe, owner of the multiple award-winning vegan beauty line Premae (and herself a PRECIOUS award winner in 2012).

Says Dr. Clare, “There are so many haircare, skincare, makeup and online retailers being created by a new generation of women of colour … Many of these brands will not successfully obtain the shelf space in a high street retailer because they will be deemed too ‘niche’… These awards are set to change that, offering a stepping stone to boosting brand credibility which will increase revenue and attract the retail buyers attention.”

On the judging panel are a few familiar faces, namely our favourite lipstick maven Florence Adepoju (founder of MDMFlow and PRECIOUS Entrepreneur of the Year 2016) as well as YouTube star Lizzie Loves and trichologist and salon owner Latenda Kalimba.

Are you a trailblazing businesswoman yourself, or know someone who is?

You can enter at with the shortlist to be announced in May 2017. Categories are: Best Haircare Brand, Best Makeup Colour Cosmetics Brand, Best Skincare, Best Online Innovation brand and the People’s Choice Best Beauty/Hair Blogger Award – the last of which the public can vote for via the Precious Facebook page.

Best of luck to everyone entering! And don’t forget to check back later in the year where we’ll be reporting on the nominees and eventual winners.
