What would you pair with your favourite character?
Now more than ever is a good time to escape the world outside and get lost in a good book. So for the sheer fun of it, we’ve selected some of the best beauty products to suit a few of our favourite literary heroines
Shug from The Color Purple (Alice Walker)
In this dark but ultimately uplifting tale set in 1930s Georgia, Shug is a glamorous jazz ‘n’ blues singer who bewitches the novel’s main character Celie and eventually becomes her lover. We’d imagine Shug would frequently sport the most striking shade of rouge on the planet – Besame lipstick in ‘Red Hot Red’ – complete with vintage-style packaging – would suit her down to the ground. £18 Cult Beauty
Zuleika from The Emperor’s Babe (Bernardine Evaristo)
Daughter of Sudanese-immigrants, Zuleika is the stifled, rebellious wife of a Roman emperor with aspirations to become a poet. Living in “Londinium” she narrates the novel in traditional blank verse as if you were reading Ovid – yet rather than come across as tragic or dour, her breezy style makes her someone you could totally go for a drink with. To imbue her skin with the rose gold shimmer of a Roman goddess, we’d choose some Zoeva Strobe Gel in ‘Corona’ applied just above the cheekbones to add some mythical allure. £10.50 love-makeup.co.uk
Hortense from Small Island (Andrea Levy)
The prim and proper Hortense arrives in London from Jamaica in 1948 where she receives a frosty reception in more ways than one. She herself has slightly snobbish tendencies and is a stickler for manners and decorum – although her life turns upside down when her expectations of English life fail to match reality. We imagine she’d appreciate Estee Lauder’s Double Wear Stay In Place Powder to keep her complexion looking immaculate as the rest of her. £33 Look Fantastic
