Why Mugler’s Aura is our go-to summer scent

For anyone who’s a fan of 90s scent Angel, Thierry Mugler’s latest concoction, Aura is going to be your next scent obsession

Perfume fans will be familiar with Angel’s star-shaped bottle and its addictive, vanilla-based scent (which kicked off the ‘gourmande’ trend in perfumery). Well last week, the iconic French fashion house unveiled their latest perfume, which is equally attention-grabbing as its beloved predecessor.

In keeping with the Mugler tradition of outlandish bottle design, Aura’s emerald green heart has a “Wizard of Oz”-like quality to it, and will make a stunning addition to your dressing table. Its contents aren’t half bad either. Those familiar punchy ‘gourmande’ notes that made us all fall in love with Angel are still there. But this time they’ve been given a fresh update with green accords, together with rhubarb leaf and orange blossom. There’s also an ingredient which has never been used in perfumery before: tiger liana, which is smoky and enveloping and makes this a cut above your run-of-the-mill designer fragrances.

The perfume has been created, the house explains, as a tribute to what Mugler sees as ‘feminine intuition’ according to the marketing materials: “He sees every woman as the archetype of instinct. He sees the expression of this instinct in her aura.” Whether you’re sold on this as a concept or not, Aura is certainly a pleasant scent that is guaranteed to get people asking what you’re wearing throughout wedding season and beyond. We particularly love the dry-down (after the scent’s been on the skin for a few hours and the main notes have evaporated). It leaves a trace of sugary almonds, that’s oh-so-pretty without being cloying, and guaranteed to please anyone with a sweet tooth. Aura launches June 30 at £49 for 30ml.
