Think taking vitamins and supplements
are for when you get older? Think again
With our poor diets and stressful lifestyles, it’s more important than ever to get an extra nutrient fix. Here are three supplements we can’t live without – and where to find them.
Cod Liver Oil
So many acne sufferers swear by this stuff – and that’s because cod liver oil contains omega 3s which work to reduce inflammation (that causes the skin to produce excess sebum – leading to those dreaded breakouts). It also helps improve bone health and brain function (the old saying that “fish is good for the brain” isn’t a myth!) and it can also lower the risk of cancer and heart disease. You can buy cod liver oil capsules from Holland and Barrett, £5.99 for 60.
This is a great supplement for all those who have trouble sleeping and who find themselves constantly tired during the day. As well as helping with fatigue and insomnia, its many other benefits include maintaining healthy muscles and teeth, lowering blood pressure, and reducing PMS and anxiety. It can be found in whole grains, nuts, fish and dark green vegetables. You can also get supplements such as Boots 2-A-Day Magnesium 375mg, £6.49 for 60.
If you find yourself constantly getting the lurghy, or frequently take public transport (a hotbed for all kinds of germs), then vitamin C is essential for boosting your immune system, so your body can fight any nasty bugs that can lead to a cold. It also helps heal wounds (ideal if you’ve had a major op) and helps protect and repair skin from sun exposure – but you still need to use that all-important SPF! To get your daily fix, nutritionist Lana Almulla recommends avoiding well-known fizzy tablets like Berocca in favour of Nutri Advanced CT-1000 TR, £16.25 for 90 tablets – available at Amazon.
The effects of supplements vary from person to person. Please consult your GP beforehand.
