Eyeshadow Takes Centre Stage at Fashion Week

Statement lids were the look du jour

As fashion month gets into full swing, we noticed a rather interesting look that polarised many of us here in the office. Namely, wearing a shimmering pastel eyeshadow with no mascara or eyeliner, to subtly define the eye without going full-on glamour. This look was showcased at the recent Cinq à Sept show in New York, where MUA Sarah Lucero for Stila applied a pretty wash of colour around the eye and left the rest minimal, save for a touch of shimmer on the cheeks.

Elsewhere at the Novis show, Uzo for Nars applied a shock of canary yellow pigment over the top lid, again forgoing mascara and letting the colour speak for itself.

Although many of us would feel “naked” without our cherished mascara and liner, this is certainly a quick and easy way to brighten up the eye area – and create a pretty daytime look. It’s also a more subtle way to sport bright colourful hues over the eyelids – and we must say, makes a change from all that moody “grunge girl” liner that’s been appearing on the catwalks season after season (we’re so over the retro 90s look, can you tell?!)

Want to try this look for yourself? A great product we’ve been playing around with is Stila’s Magnificent Metals Glitter & Glow Liquid Eye Shadow in Ballet Baby (£23, Cult Beauty), which blends ridiculously easily and delivers a subtle yet buildable pigment (so you don’t have to be super precise with application) with a touch of sparkle. It’s perfect for popping on in a hurry for a touch of polish as you scoot off for work or college. Or if you can’t let go of the mermaid beauty trend (can’t say we blame you) then Maybelline Color Tattoo 24Hr Eyeshadow 20 Turquoise Forever (£5.99) delivers a dazzling aquamarine in a gel formula.
