Jetting off? Dija dishes out her
top tips for beautiful skin in the sun
I love summer holidays, who doesn’t? It’s time to kick back, get some much deserved rest and relaxation, wear floaty dresses and drink Mimosa’s on a far flung beach. But one thing it’s definitely not time to do is throw good skincare routines out of the window. You can modify your skincare routine, but you definitely can’t leave it at home.
So many brands now do travel or sample size versions of popular products so it’s worth keeping an eye out as they save a lot of space and weight in your wash bag. It’s always handy to have a few decanting bottles at home too. I love the sturdy mix and match Muji travel containers. They are small and perfectly formed so you don’t have to leave your favourites behind.
Being in the sunshine all day might feel lovely for us sun starved Brits but it can dehydrate your skin, so it’s nice to have something cooling waiting for you back at your hotel. This year, I’ll be taking Aveda Intensive Hydrating Masque, £28.50 which is an aloe and soothing lavender humectant gel meaning it draws moisture to your skin. Apply a thick layer on cleansed skin for ten minutes and remove with a flannel. Your skin will feel bouncy and refreshed. Even better, keep it in the fridge so its extra cooling!
Keep your skin hydrated when on the move with a purse sized hydrating mist. These have been a revelation in the skincare world, but its important to get one with a fine spray. Grown Alchemist Hydra-Mist, £18 is a mighty little bottle with hyaluronic acid, protein peptides and antioxidants to plump, balance, moisturise and boost radiation. It’s even small enough to get through security and you can start enjoying its benefits from take off.
I keep make up minimal on holiday. At most I wear a light tinted moisturiser and mascara, but I am always militant about taking it all off at the end of the day and so should you. The combination of stale make up, heat, sweat and grime is a recipe for unwanted spots. As a double cleansing devotee I use Antonia Burrell Natural Glow Cleansing Oil, £29.50 to dissolve the last traces of make up. It’s blended with zingy orange and lime, which have stellar antibacterial qualities to keep skin germ free.
Don’t forget your lips! Everyone does and wonders why they are dry and chapped on their return. Lips don’t have the ability to self-moisturise like facial skin, so they need a helping hand. Exfoliate with a flannel to keep them smooth and use lip balm frequently. Brit brand Dr. PAWPAW, £6.95 used the potency of naturally fermented papaya to soothe and moisturise lips. Alongside the original, there are also two tinted versions which also double up as blushers.
Finally, it goes without saying, a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against ageing (UVA) and burning (UVB) is an absolute must!
