September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month. And to help raise awareness about this life-long condition (which particularly affects the African and Caribbean communities), DUMEBI founder Barbara Biosah has launched the Gideon’s Treasure Foundation. As a fellow sufferer, the luxury fashion brand founder is helping others living with Sickle Cell via a series of free creative workshops and fitness groups. These include fashion and art workshops, yoga classes and indoor football training as well as a book club dedicated to Sickle Cell authors and text.
Barbara launched DUMEBI in 2016 after finding solace in fashion as a young girl living with Sickle Cell Anaemia. When she was unwell or had to visit hospital, she would ask her mum to bring her sketchbook so she could draw. The designer says this passion motivated her to get well and dream of a bright future, aiding her recovery in the process. Today she’d like to share her love of fashion design while providing a valuable creative outlet for fellow Sickle Cell sufferers with the launch of her own non-profit foundation.
