Thanks to Blue Planet II and a slew
of new government incentives
to get us to ditch disposable
plastics, our beauty regimes are
coming under greater scrutiny for
their environmental credentials.
The numbers make scary reading:
Greenpeace estimates that 12.7
million tonnes of plastic end up in
our oceans each year. Cast your eyes
over your bathroom shelves and you
may be surprised at the amount of
plastic: from your favourite shampoo
and micellar water you love, to the
mascara you’ve just bought (which
also comes with an extra layer of
plastic safety wrapping). It may feel
like you’ve been defeated before
you’ve even begun, but more beauty
companies are doing their part for
the environment. Here are a few to
help you go green…

DR BRONNER’S
With the addition incentive of allowing
you to buy in bulk (you can buy in a
mega 946ml) DR BRONNER’S uses
100% post-consumer recycled plastic
bottles. What’s more, the formula
is dubbed a miracle multi-tasker,
‘18-in-One’, which tackles cleansing
from top to toe thanks to a host of
natural ingredients. It’s even great for
household grime and laundry!

THE ORDINARY
This already-cult brand, known for its
potent science-based formulas at low
prices, has pledged to eliminate plastic
from all of its products by the end of
the year! This doesn’t just extend to
the droppers and bottles they sell but
shopping bags too.

MAC COSMETICS
Heard of Back To MAC? It’s the latest
initiative from the makers of the
famous Ruby Woo. Return six MAC
empties to store for recycling and
you’ll get a free lipstick. Now that’s a
deal we’re down with.

LUSH
Unnecessary waste has always been
at the forefront of LUSH’s company
policy, with more than 40% of its
products free from packaging – and
the ones that do use recyclable black
pots that are melted down to make
more. Store up your LUSH pots and
for every five returned to the store,
you can get a new face mask for free.
What’s not to love?

GARNIER
GARNIER has teamed up with
TERRACYCLE, allowing you to drop
off your old shampoo, skincare and
make-up empties at TERRACYCLE
depots or posting it to them for free.
In exchange, you receive points which
you can redeemed at some of your
favourite charities. Already they’ve
saved 33 million units from landfill.
Nice one GARNIER!
