After experiencing hair loss, Ekwy was impassioned to research natural hair ingredients. Today her brand, Equi Botanics, is up for a Vogue Beauty Award

What was the seed that first planted your business idea?

About 10 years ago, I lost a patch of my hair to a tightly done weave. Trauma and curiosity led me to research ingredients. I experimented a lot and finally found a formula that worked. Friends couldn’t believe the difference in my hair and asked if they could try some too. A germ of an idea started to form… ‘What if I could sell this?’

Our masque is the mother of all deep conditioners. My hairdresser calls it the magic potion for super-soft hair. It’s formulated using Amazonian plants that nourish deep in the hair shaft. It has been nominated for the 2019 Vogue Beauty Awards!

What’s the biggest lesson you have learned in business?

A coach once told me to always remember that the products and company are not me. I work for the brand and it has its own identity. Once I realised that, I let go of taking everything so personally. I learned to act like a company and look for creative ways to solve problems as well as take praise.

What are your beauty essentials?

I’m much more of a skincare buff. I use Antonia Burrell’s Skin Conditioner as a primer before House of Purple Rose Serum. I’m looking for a good sun-cream with a high SPF to add to my collection.
