Like fashion trends and makeup style, some hairstyles never really disappear. They’re just laying in wait for the right moment to return! French curl braids are a perfect example. Having enjoyed huge popularity throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, the protective style has made a welcome comeback, thanks to TikTok and a new generation discovering its timeless look.
Also known as Nollywood braids, French curl braids feature sleek box braids with soft, cascading curls at the ends. The trend has amassed hundreds of millions of views on TikTok, and it’s easy to see why.
What are French curl braids?
French curl braids begin with neatly sectioned, individual box braids before flowing into loose, bouncy curls towards the ends. Unlike boho braids, where curls are woven throughout the style, French curl braids keep the braid itself sleek and defined, with the curls reserved for the final few inches.
The style first gained popularity in West Africa and became closely associated with actresses in Nigeria’s film industry, earning it the nickname Nollywood braids. It was also a favourite of celebrities during the early 2000s, making it a nostalgic trend that’s found a fresh audience today.
One of the reasons for the style’s renewed popularity is that it’s super versatile. French curl braids feel lightweight, elegant and suitable for everything from everyday wear to weddings, holidays and special occasions.
What hair is used for French curl braids?
Unlike some other protective styles that use human hair, French curl braids are usually created with specially designed synthetic braiding hair. The fibres are made to hold their silky curls for weeks, helping the hairstyle maintain its signature bounce regardless of humidity or daily wear.
The amount of hair you’ll need depends on the length and thickness of your braids, but most full-head styles require between five and eight packs of braiding hair.
Many salons now stock French curl hair, although it’s always worth checking in advance, particularly if you’re opting for blended shades or lighter colours. If you’re unsure, browse Spell Beauty‘s huge range of premium synthetic options.

What happens during a French curl braid appointment?
As with any protective style, preparation is key. Arriving with freshly washed, conditioned and blow-dried hair helps create the neatest possible finish and keeps your scalp healthy while your hair is braided.
The appointment itself usually takes between four and seven hours, depending on the desired length and size of the braids.
Your stylist will section the hair into individual parts before feeding in extensions as they braid. Once the braid reaches the chosen length, it is secured with a knot, allowing the pre-curled ends to fall freely.
Unlike some braid styles, French curl braids don’t require the ends to be dipped in hot water. The curls are already formed within the extension hair, and exposing them to hot water can actually damage their shape.
How long do French curl braids last?
With the right care, French curl braids can last for up to six weeks.
The loose curls tend to show signs of wear before the braids themselves, so gently misting the ends with water and brushing through them with care can help prevent tangling and maintain their definition.
At bedtime, twisting the hair into two loose plaits before covering it with a silk bonnet or scarf will help preserve the curls, reduce frizz and keep the style looking fresher for longer.
Are French curl braids worth trying?
If you’re looking for a protective style that feels really effortless and beautiful, French curl braids are well worth considering. They offer the practicality of traditional box braids while adding soft movement and texture through the curled ends.
