Everything you need to know about Serena Williams’ debut at NYFW

Serena Williams debuted her clothing line, S by Serena, at New York Fashion Week – and it’s as wearable as we imagined!

Serena is known for inventing clothing and accessories to suit her needs when she can’t find them on the market – and it’s a concept that resonates with many women. We all wish we could find jeans that fit both our waists and our hips, or discover the perfect thigh high boots that don’t feel like they’re strangling our thighs. However, not all of us have the facilities to create our own clothing line! That’s why we rely on women like Serena to create clothing that caters to different types of women. And that’s exactly what she’s done.

Between playing in four tennis grand slams, navigating press conferences and recovering from injuries, the star found the time to design a collection that many would proudly add to their wardrobes. From buttery suede trench coats to practical-yet-stylish boiler suits and flattering leopard print dresses, this collection ticks all the boxes.

It’s inspired by the hustle of the nineties, where women had escaped the patronising ‘working girl’ narrative of previous decades. S by Serena is made for all women, “whether they’re a mom, entrepreneur, or running around a tennis court!” Williams told Vogue before her show at Midtown Manhattan’s Klarna Style360.

When it came to the colour palette, Serena let us know that neon is going nowhere. Pops of bright pink and lime cut through the neutrals and darker tones in the form of duster jackets and slinky slips. Several patterns stood out, including a collection of sibilant words on a cobalt blue background; a purple, distorted zebra print; and a smart, grey check.

At the end of the show, Williams appeared on stage with two-year-old daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. to thank the crowd, which included celebrity friends Kim Kardashian West, Ashley Graham, and La La Anthony in the front row.

Williams went direct to consumer with her label, allowing fans to access the collection right away. Some pieces have already sold out online, which is a testament to how this stunning fall collection has achieved its goal in being inclusive, accessible and endlessly wearable.
