How to get the best from your shampoo

Are you getting the most out of your shampoo? Get more than your money’s worth with tips from celebrity hairdresser Jay Birmingham.

Shampoos

Maintaining healthy and beautiful hair starts with great products that work with the hair to keep it looking and feeling glamorous at all times. But are you getting the most out of your hydrating shampoo? As a celebrity hair stylist, I’ve had the privilege of working with numerous clients and discovering the secrets to achieving fantastic results. I’m going to share valuable tips and advice on how to maximise the benefits of your shampoo, so you can enjoy the hair of your dreams!

Prioritise Scalp Massage
Don’t underestimate the power of a good scalp massage while shampooing. Not only is it incredibly relaxing, but it also stimulates blood circulation, promotes hair growth, and ensures the shampoo reaches everywhere. Take a few extra minutes to massage your scalp gently in circular motions with your fingertips. This technique allows the shampoo to work its magic, effectively cleansing and nourishing your hair and scalp.

Use the Right Amount of Shampoo
Using too much shampoo can leave your hair feeling heavy and greasy, while using too little may not adequately cleanse your scalp and strands. As a general rule, a coin-sized amount of shampoo is usually sufficient for most hair lengths. Adjust the amount based on your hair’s length and thickness. Start with a modest amount and add more if necessary. Finding the perfect balance will ensure thorough cleansing without stripping away essential oils.

Rinse Thoroughly
Proper rinsing is crucial to remove all traces of shampoo from your hair. Incomplete rinsing can lead to product build up, leaving your hair looking dull and lifeless. Take your time to rinse your hair thoroughly with lukewarm water until it feels clean and slippery. Pay extra attention to the roots and ensure there are no residual traces left behind.

Avoid Hot Water
While a steamy shower may be tempting, hot water can strip your hair of its natural oils, leaving it dry and prone to breakage. Go for lukewarm or cool water when rinsing your hair. Coldwater rinses can help seal the cuticle, lock in moisture, and add a beautiful shine to your locks.
