Hands up if you dread wash day… well, the feeling is mutual amongst some of us here on the Spell team. Wash day is an Olympic sport that we don’t get enough credit for. However, we’re not all the same. Some of us enjoy this self-care practice and love to indulge in it. Spell is here on the lookout for a haircare brand that appeals to both the lovers and haters of wash day and we think we have found them: introducing Olew Hair Care!
Our testers are two sisters with 4c hair who are keen to find the perfect products for their tresses…
Here’s an honest review of Olew’s hair products. This hair system is a five-step treatment consisting of products which work amazingly together or individually.
Olew Cleansing Shampoo
I started off my wash with this product. It gently lathered and had a good slip. As instructed, I washed my hair twice with this shampoo and, true to its name – ‘cleansing shampoo’, it was a deep clean, but probably too deep of a clean, almost stripping. My hair was left literally squeaky clean. I definitely recommend it if you have heavy build-up in your hair; for example, if you’ve missed a few wash days (or weeks). But if you do indulge in a wash day more regularly, maybe stick to the one wash and rinse.
Olew Clarifying Conditioner
Next up is the conditioner. Again, amazing slip and the smell of the conditioner was gorgeous – a real earthy natural sent. But it did fall a little flat when it came to actually injecting my hair with the much need moisture. Although my hair looked hydrated, it just didn’t really feel that way.
Olew Original Oil
Hands down the best product of the bunch. I applied a generous amount when my hair was wet and worked the product through. My hair instantly felt moisturised, and it added a nice sheen to it. I definitely look forward to using this product again. This oil will most likely do wonders for any hair type – just adjust the amount you apply.
Olew Curl Cream
Now, I don’t have much curl definition and I have been on the hunt to find a good curl cream that lives up to its name. Admittedly, the Olew Curl Cream does. This product did help my curl pattern push through. So, a job definitely well done. The cream is thick and sits heavy on the hair; therefore, this should be used sparingly.
Olew Defining Curl Gel
Last up is the gel. Amazing formula and it’s not too sticky. This product, combined with the curl cream, forms a true dynamic duo. Like I said above, I sometimes struggle to get a good curl definition going on, but using this product after the curl cream really helped my curls pop. This product is a slow burner; only once my hair is fully dried could I really see the coils pushing through. However, similar to the cream, this product does sit quite heavy on the hair which is slightly disappointing.
The verdict
Overall, these products are good – six Spell Stars out of 10. I really enjoyed the scent of the product and all the products had amazing slip, yet they weren’t too greasy. The standout product for me was the Olew Original Oil. It provided the much needed moisture in minutes. I do feel like these products would be much better suited to our 3A to 4B cutie, as my 4C hair craves a lot more moisture.
