This is how to wear the folk fashion trend

Conjuring thoughts of bucolic picnics in countryside meadows, folk fashion is providing us with the romantic escapism we all need.

The term ‘folk’ is a broad one, covering lifestyle, music, film and, of course, fashion, across the world. It doesn’t belong to any country (although the word itself may stem from the German word ‘volk’, meaning ‘people’), but across cultures it shares certain characteristics: authenticity, free-spiritedness and the encompassing of oral traditions.

When it comes to translating this into something we can wear, we can take inspiration from the SS20 collections of designers who are embracing the whimsical and organic nature of folk, and stylish Instagrammers editorialising the pastoral.

Jacquemus’ iconic 10th anniversary show, taking place in a dreamy lavender field in Provence, France, was the epitome of contemporary summer folk. The designer showcased maximalist linen blazers next to flowing maxi dresses in colours that complemented the palette of the environment.

Meanwhile, Erdem’s SS20 runway established itself in a tree-lined London squre, combining the yokes and shawls of 19th century English fashion with the embroidery and saturated colours of traditional Mexican huilpiles.

Wanting to try the folk trend for yourself? Now’s the time – the shops are brimming with folksy designs across the board. Here’s some inspiration for your wardrobe:
