Let’s put some respect on bulk braiding hair. The humble pack of extensions known for residing in transparent plastic packaging has been the ride or die for classic single plaits, not to mention a plethora of other protective styles, for generations. Considered reliable, affordable, versatile – do we need to go on? The demand for bulk hair is at an all-time high. The explosion of goddess, boho, knotless, koroba braids (again, do we need to go on?) has caused an epidemic-style resurgence. Hair shops across the county are filled to the brim with an assortment of textures making us feel like the hypothetical kid in the candy shop.
The upgrade in colours and lengths make the styles seen on TV and social media highly accessible and achievable. Meagan Good’s signature cherry red faux locs in the series Harlem triggered a spike in sales for colour 99j (a mahogany wine colour). The knotless braid trend was organically endorsed by the likes of Michelle Obama, Tracee Ellis Ross and Zendaya. And, when international travel reopened in late 2021, goddess and boho braids became the failsafe holiday hair thanks to its exotic appearance and practicality.
From a hairdressers’ standpoint, the advancements made to install bulk hair has made certain products popular. “I always tell my clients to pick up pre-stretched hair because it’s easier to pull apart and reduces the amount of shedding,” says Sharon Thompson, owner of Josh Hair and Beauty. “This means you’ll use less packs of hair, which is great for saving money, and it speeds up the braiding process. With non pre-stretched I used to spend 30 minutes stretching out hair before starting a full head of box braids.” Human bulk hair is back in fashion too, and this is reflected in store sales. “Wefted human hair used to be our top-seller but this has now been replaced by human bulk hair,” says Dally Keleta owner of Oche Afro Hair & Beauty Cosmetics. “The most popular textures are deep curl and water wave used for goddess braids. We have a salon at the back of the store and it’s the most requested style.”
If you’re unsure where to start with buying bulk hair, our guide will help navigate you to your desired style.

What is bulk braiding hair?
Bulk hair refers to a bundle of hair that is not attached to a lace piece or a weft (the track used for weaves). It is essentially a loose gathering of fibres held together by a simple tie at the top. This format is designed specifically for braiding, as it allows the stylist to pluck exactly the amount of hair needed for each individual braid.
The benefits of bulk braiding hair
The primary draw of bulk braiding hair is the level of customisation it offers. Unlike pre-made crochet loops, bulk hair allows for a seamless integration at the root, which is essential for a natural finish. Additionally stylist’s can control the thickness of every braid “Working with bulk hair makes it easier to ensure the weight is distributed safely across your scalp, protecting your edges while still achieving high-impact length,” says Feme ambassador Aisha Ibrahim. “Better still, high-quality synthetic bulk hair is remarkably lightweight; you can achieve a hip-grazing look without feeling like you’re wearing a weighted blanket.”

Synthetic hair vs human hair
Not all synthetic hair is created equal. Often associated with looking a feeling fake, that faux feel is a thing of the past if you shop smart. For those who are brand loyal and value the classics, X-Pression is a staple for a reason. The generous length and its ability to be hot-water set keep ends tapered rather than frayed.
Newcomers like Outre Twisted Up and Urban offer a luxe experience without the human hair price tag. The premium SYN fibres holds shape even in humid conditions and eliminates the tedious task of “pulling” the hair to get those feathered ends, allowing your stylist to get straight to braiding.
If you fancy ash tones and mermaid waves or ombre lengths with a boho crinkle, synthetic bulk hair is a frontrunner for must-be-seen-in lengths, colours and textures, whereas, human bulk hair is prized for flexibility; it can be dyed, heat-styled, and treated just like your own hair. If you prioritise longevity or experience scalp flare-ups with installing ‘fake’ hair, then human hair is perhaps a more suited solution.
How to care for bulk braiding hair
A protective style is only as good as the maintenance behind it. To keep your braids looking fresh, focus on the foundation: your scalp. Use a diluted, antimicrobial shampoo or a specialised scalp cleanser to keep things itch-free without frizzing your braids.
When it comes to the hair itself, a light serum can keep those stray flyaways in check. At night, a silk or satin bonnet is non-negotiable. If you have opted for a longer style, consider a loose pineapple ponytail or a larger bonnet to prevent the braids from tangling and fraying while you sleep. Treat your braids with respect, and they’ll look salon-fresh for weeks.
