How would you describe Yemzi designs in three words?
Bold, prints, exclusive.
Where do you get your design inspiration from?
For my in-house fashion prints, I’m inspired by nature’s textures, patterns and colours. Some silhouettes of my garments take inspiration from traditional West African clothing, like my silk ruffle wrapper skirt, tunic dress and boubou to name a few. I design for the modern woman, so you’ll find a headwrap teamed with a bomber and drawstring skirt. The #YemziGirl is trend-conscious but has a strong sense of individuality and wears what she feels confident and comfortable in.
Has the pandemic helped or hampered the creative industry?
The pandemic threw a spanner in the works for all industries globally. The pivot which many creatives took to adjust the new normal was inspiring to see. I went deeper into Yemzi’s accessories with our ruffle face masks and silk scrunchies. I also explored 3D renderings of my designs which I plan to make more of.
When the pandemic broke out in 2020 I stopped the swimwear range I had been planning. Now over a year later I’m excited to see my customers slaying in Yemzi swim on vacations and at events.
What advice would you give your younger self?
Stay focused. You’re on the right path. You’ve really got this. Document and share your journey more. Nurture relationships; people hold keys to the doors that you are trying to break through. Say no more often; don’t settle for less than what you really want. If it doesn’t align, don’t embrace it. Don’t just think you’re special – embody it, express it, shout about it.
