MUA Adeola Gboyega on collaborating with Joy Adenuga

Two of our favourite makeup artists have collaborated on a brush collection – and it’s a must-have for any beauty buff.

Adeola Gboyega x joy Adenuga

This is the collaboration we didn’t know we needed. How did you ladies meet and come up with the idea of a collaboration?

Joy approached me last year and asked if I would like to partner with her on a collaboration and it was a no brainer for me because I absolutely love her brushes. By Joy Adenuga brushes are of such high-quality, beautifully crafted, and they occupy an essential space in my personal and professional kit. So all things considered, being a part of this collaboration just made total sense.

What was the best part working together?

For me, it has been amazing joining forces with another successful makeup artist and Black owned business owner. What Joy has created with ByJoy Adenuga is so admirable, and collaboration within the beauty industry is such a powerful and important endeavour. Joy is also a fellow makeup artist and expert educator, so all these components really aligned with what I value and the way I work. My favourite part of the whole process was working with Joy and the team on shoot day for our promotional images. Just seeing all of our hard work come together was truly satisfying.

In your edit four brushes have been “curated and cherry picked”. What was it about these brushes that they had to make the cut?

Both Joy and I are passionate about beauty and skincare, and we’re really committed to educating others on how to create beautiful skin with makeup. Being granted the opportunity to collaborate on the Flawless Face edit really lends to this. I am frequently asked how I create my signature flawless base and it definitely begins with having the right tools.  Subsequently, I have selected the brushes that I tend to use regularly and are everything you need to create a flawless base, whether you are a beginner or professional makeup artist.

What advice would you give to a budding make-up artist?

My advice would be to never stop learning. Even with all my years of experience, I am still commited to learning by practicing on myself often and watching my favourite makeup artists. This is integral for keeping abreast of all the latest trends and to stretch your artistry skills and grow as a makeup artist.

What trends are you loving right now and why?

I am loving the fact the fact that blush is having a moment and people are not afraid to use it! I love blusher and the bountiful blush trend is a great way to add a bit of colour into your makeup routine. I usually consider myself a Glow Queen, but I am loving that the soft matte blush era reminiscent of the ’90s is making a comeback.

Men’s make-up is on the up, any quick tips for guys venturing into make-up for the first time?

Absolutely! My advice would be to just wear it your way – as much or little as you want. Skin prep is essential, especially to ensure a smooth application if you have facial hair. I would recommend starting with concealer first to help brighten your under eyes, and then one to help touch up any areas of concern on your skin.
