The first thing you notice when you meet pioneering skincare guru Nicolas Travis is his incredibly luminous skin. So smooth and glowing, you can just about glimpse your reflection in it, Travis is the perfect advert for his product line Allies of Skin. The pioneering products are known for their “clean formulation” ethos. (That means no silicones, no parabens, no drying alcohol and nothing that will disrupt your hormones – hoorah!). Their masks and facial spritz have been stuff of legend in beauty circles, working wonders on stressed, acne-prone skin – including Nicolas’s own. Here’s some other hard-won widsom he chose to share with us.
“I don’t believe there is one ingredient that is singularly better than another.”
“Just as your body can’t survive on kale alone, your skin is a living organ so it needs all the nutrients you can give it. That’s why our formulas are concentrated – it’s not just one berry harvested at midnight by nuns! It’s just giving your skin everything it needs.”
“The problem with traditional acne products is they just treat the symptoms, they dry out the zit.”
“Your skin just ends up feeling tight, as the formulations are so harsh.
Our new Promise Keeper Blemish Facial rebuilds the skin barrier, nourishes the skin and reduces inflammation – if your skin is not inflamed it’s not breaking out. If you use this two weeks every night, you’ll see a difference.”
“Your skin isn’t just exposed to pollution when you go outside.”
“High energy visible light from your smart phones and laptops are another source. You can hide from the sun if you’re not going out during the day, but if you’re watching Netflix in bed, your skin is still suffering! As you get older, you’re going to need some sort of protection for you skin, which is what our new All-Day Pollution Repair Mask is designed to tackle.”
“Skin works the same way as a sponge – moisture attracts moisture.”
“You should always apply products on damp skin, so they absorb better.”
“Facial oils are not hydrators.”
“Hyaluronic acid is a moisture magnet.”
“If your skin is a bit dry it pulls any residual moisture from the deeper layers of skin to hydrate the surface. Therefore you need to apply it to a moist surface – which is why you should mist first and apply a hyaluronic acid treatment afterwards like our new Bright Future Overnight Facial. Once it comes into contact with water, it knows what it’s doing and your skin will end up supremely hydrated and plumped. So mist, mask, mist! We call it the 30-second facial!”
