Sometimes it takes a global crisis to realise just how big-hearted some of our favourite celebrities can be.
The Weeknd is among a host of big names rolling their sleeves up when it matters by selling personalised facemasks, with all proceeds going to a charity helping those in the music industry during the pandemic. He joins Billie Elilsh and Ariana Grande who are also selling the $15 facemasks which will fund Musicares.
Someone else helping on the mask front is rapper Future whose FreeWishes Foundation has supplied more than 100,000 protective gear to frontline workers. Tia-Wilburn Anderson, who co-founded FreeWishes, says: “It is important to my brother Future and I that we are of service to our community, especially during this pandemic and throughout the year. This is why our family created the foundation.”
Elsewhere, rapper 2 Chainz is putting his culinary skills to good use by donating more than 100 meals to Atlanta’s homeless population. 2Chainz and his business partner Snoop Dillard currently operate the Escobar Restaurant and Tapas in the city, which they had planned to reopen. Instead, they are providing a brilliant community service, offering free meals to the homeless as well as visitors outside their restaurants.
Cardi B, meanwhile, is also rallying her troops. She’s teamed up with Fashion Nova to launch a campaign giving away $1,000 every hour to those in need at this time until the fund reaches a whopping $1million. She told her 6.2million followers on Instagram: “Tell us how the $1,000 can help you during these times. Through her non-profit organization called the Clara Lionel Foundation, Rihanna’s shown her super-human heart again, this time by donating an immense $5million to a number of organisations across the globe looking after underserved communities. This includes Direct Relief and the World Health Organization’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund. What a woman!
Keeping people from being ejected from their homes is the priority for Birdman. In his Instagram post, the rapper and record exec said he’d be putting his hands in his own pocket to come to the aid of New Orleans’ residents struggling to pay for their accommodation. “I would like 2 offer to pay everybody rent for month of May (for those who in need) in residents area of UPTOWN New Orleans where I was born and raised,” he wrote.
