The Spell-ometer: May 2026

What’s hot and what’s not in the world of Spell?

From beauty trends we’re suddenly obsessed with to the things we’re leaving behind in spring, welcome to The Spell-ometer – our completely unscientific but enthusiastic temperature check on what’s hot and what’s… absolutely not.

This month, nervous-system resets, floral nails and utility fashion are climbing fast, while fake beauty buys and questionable wellness advice are getting side-eyed.

Going up

Cortisol detox

Stress is out, nervous-system resets are in. From magnesium mocktails to vagus-nerve gadgets, the cortisol detox trend is all about calming the body instead of punishing it. Burnout isn’t a badge of honour anymore!

Garden party nails

3D florals are blooming everywhere, with tiny, sculpted petals turning manicures into miniature gardens. Be sure to book extra time with your nail artist to perfect these detailed designs.

Utility chic

Pockets, pockets and more pockets. Cargo pants are back again, but this time styled with ballet flats. Practical meets cool… and we’re not mad about having somewhere to put our phone for once.

The hair regrowth boom

Your scalp is getting the skincare treatment. Red light therapy caps and brushes are trending with anyone serious about hair growth, promising stronger follicles without drastic treatments.

Going down

Fake beauty

A Which? investigation from July 2025 found that 67% of cosmetics bought from online marketplaces may be counterfeit, leaving consumers at “risk [of] buying untested, unregulated and potentially toxic cosmetics.” Beware!

Gut health myths

Social media is full of misinformation, so when it comes to your gut health, it’s time to put down the TikTok Shop cure-alls and pick up the phone to call your GP.

The price of looking effortless

A rise in demand for ‘undetectable’ tweakments has led to a 40% increase in aesthetic procedures in the past four years. In short, the less we want to look like we’ve had work done, the more work it often takes.

No Melody? No magic.

The Pussycat Dolls have reunited, with a new single and a tour to boot. But there’s one key player missing: Melody Thornton. Fans are lamenting the fact that this comeback feels a little off-key.
